Bring a touch of national heritage to your cleansing blends. Indigenous to the Western Cape fynbos, this aromatic shrub has been used for generations by the San and Khoi people and was later embraced by early Cape settlers. Its fragrant leaves were traditionally brewed into teas, infused in vinegars or brandy, and even used around the home as a natural insect deterrent.
♡ Why we love it: If you’ve ever worked with Buchu, you’ll remember that unmistakable blackcurrant-like scent, derived from its rich essential oil composition. Compounds like buchu camphor (diosphenol), menthone, limonene, and traces of pulegone contribute to its fresh, minty aroma. This makes it a favourite ingredient in beverages, fragrances, and botanical potpourris. In herbal practice, Buchu is often included in cleansing and urinary-supporting blends, where it functions as a refreshing natural diuretic.
