Sometimes skin can feel dehydrated when dead skin cells build up on the surface, making it harder for moisture to absorb properly. A gentle exfoliating ingredient like lactic acid can help improve this by refining the skin’s surface.

Lactic acid is a gentle exfoliating ingredient (an AHA) that helps remove dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. This can support smoother texture, more even tone, and a brighter-looking complexion over time. It also has natural humectant properties, meaning it helps the skin hold onto moisture while it exfoliates.

A water-based formulation should always be preserved with a broad-spectrum preservative (like Geogard 221). Store it in a clean, airtight bottle, away from heat and direct sunlight. When properly preserved and stored, it typically lasts several weeks to a few months, depending on hygiene and storage conditions.

Lactic acid is generally considered one of the gentler alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) because it also has hydrating properties. However, sensitivity varies from person to person. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to start slowly (1–2 times per week), use a low concentration, and always do a patch test before applying it to your full face.

This type of serum is best used 2–3 times per week, ideally in the evening. Because it gently exfoliates the skin, it’s important to introduce it slowly and observe how your skin responds. It is generally suitable for most skin types, but those with very sensitive or compromised skin should start cautiously and always patch test first.
