Easy DIY Hair Wax for rebellious hair

Easy DIY Hair Wax for rebellious hair

Aiden van Wyk

I will never forget that sinking feeling - coming home after a day out, hair freshly cut and stepping into a shower. My hand reaching to touch my hair and it feeling... like the texture of Easter Grass? Lifeless, dehydrated noodles? The tail of a neglected horse?

Have I somehow abused my virgin hair today?

Bamboozled, I traced back the past hours and realized that I bought and applied something new from the barber today - a hair wax.

And though it does what it's intended to do very well (wax the hair down), it does so at the sacrifice of long-term hair health.

And even worse; it's a sacrifice you don't have to make. Because it turns out not only can you make a hair wax that nourishes the scalp, it's also super easy. Literally all you need to do is melt the ingredients together and decant!

Which oils do you use for a hair wax?

We, as DIY formulators, have the unique opportunity to customise.

Just like with beard oils, we can choose exactly what ingredients to use based on our own scalp's needs and our personal goals. You can select oils for hair growth, scalp nourishment, definition and so much more.

Oils for Dry and damaged Hair repair:

The below combinations of oils would provide intensive repair for damaged and / or brittle hair.

For Hair Growth and Thickness:

The below combinations are intended to increase blood flow to the scalp, strengthen follicles and create an optimal environment for hair growth.

For Oily Hair and Scalp Control:

Blending these oils will clarify the scalp, controlling excess oil production while still providing the necessary moisture.

For Curls, Definition and Moisture:

Such blends will aid in defining curl patterns and fighting frizz.

For Dandruff and Scalp Issues:

These oils address fungal causes of dandruff, while also soothing inflammation and irritation.

For Fine Hair Volume and Texture

These oils, when blended, are lightweight. This means they will add volume and texture without weighing the hair down.

For Sensitive Scalps:

These gentle oil blends help to calm irritation and reduces redness while still providing styling benefits.

Hair Wax Formula

Before we specify the formula, I'll give you the formula for the 'base' so that you can customise with whichever oils you prefer most from above:

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Melt the Beeswax, Carrier Oils and Ceto Stearyl Alcohol in a double boiler until fully liquid and combined.
  2. Mix in the Clay.
  3. Once fully combined, remove from the heat.
  4. As it cools below 40°C, add the Vitamin E and Essential Oils.
  5. Mix until fully combined.
  6. Pour into containers to let set.

If stored in a cool, dark place - this should generally have a shelf life of 12 - 18 months (dependent on the stability of your oils chosen). If you notice a rancid smell or texture changes, it may be time to discard it.

Tip: This is best applied to slightly damp hair and remember to always patch test before trying any new ingredients.

A Classy, Medium Hold Hair Wax Formula, with ingredients to nourish the scalp.

This is the formula I personally use for my hair wax - it feels much better than the one bought from stores:

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Melt the Beeswax, Mango Butter, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Castor Oil and Ceto Stearyl Alcohol in a double boiler until fully liquid and combined.
  2. Mix in the Red Kaolin Clay.
  3. Once fully combined, remove from the heat.
  4. As it cools below 40°C, add the Vitamin E and Rosemary Essential Oil.
  5. Mix until fully combined.
  6. Pour into containers to let set.
