Our DIY Essiac Tea Blend Kit brings together the four traditional botanicals used to prepare the classic Essiac herbal decoction. Designed for beginners, this bundle makes it easy to prepare your own traditional blend at home without having to source each botanical individually.

Unlike most herbal teas, Essiac is traditionally prepared as a decoction. This means the herbs are gently simmered and then left to steep, helping extract from tougher botanicals such as roots and bark.

Essiac Tea was popularised in the early 20th century by Canadian nurse René Caisse, whose surname spelled backwards gives the blend its name. The recipe is said to have been inspired by traditional Ojibwa herbal knowledge and has since become one of the world's best-known traditional herbal blends.

Some modern variations of the traditional Essiac formula include additional botanicals such as:

  • Kelp – traditionally included as a natural source of iodine and minerals.
  • Watercress / Stinging Nettle – traditionally valued as a nutrient-rich leafy herb.
  • Red Clover – traditionally used in herbal cleansing blends and often valued for its mineral-rich profile and naturally occurring isoflavones.
  • Blessed Thistle / Dandelion Root/ Milk Thistle – traditionally used as a bitter herb in herbal tonics.

These botanicals are not part of the original four-herb Essiac blend, but are sometimes included

  • What is Essiac Tea?
  • Essiac Tea is a traditional four-herb herbal blend made from burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm bark and rhubarb root. It was popularised in Canada during the early 20th century by nurse René Caisse and has since become one of the world's best-known traditional herbal preparations.

  • Why is Essiac prepared as a decoction instead of an infusion?
  • Unlike delicate leaves and flowers, Essiac contains roots and bark. These tougher botanicals are traditionally simmered in water before being left to steep, helping extract their constituents more effectively than a simple infusion.

  • What herbs are found in traditional Essiac Tea?
  • The classic Essiac formula contains four botanicals:

    - Burdock Root
    - Sheep Sorrel
    - Slippery Elm Bark
    - Rhubarb Root

Some modern variations also include herbs such as red clover, kelp, stinging nettle, watercress or dandelion root, although these are not part of the original four-herb blend.

  • Does this kit contain the original four-herb Essiac blend?
  • Yes. This DIY kit contains the four botanicals traditionally used to prepare the classic Essiac Tea recipe.

  • Can I customise my Essiac Tea blend?
  • Absolutely. Many home herbalists choose to prepare the traditional four-herb blend as-is, while others add additional botanicals such as red clover, stinging nettle, kelp or dandelion root to create their own variation.

  • Is Essiac Tea scientifically proven?
  • Essiac Tea has a long history of traditional use and remains popular worldwide. While many historical health claims have been made about the blend over the years, modern scientific evidence is limited, and it should not be considered a substitute for professional medical care.
