What You'll Need

Bentonite Healing Clay
1 tablespoon
Forms the cleansing base of the mask, helping absorb excess oil and lift away surface build-up for skin that feels fresher and looks clearer after rinsing.

Orange Blossom Honey
1 teaspoon
Adds natural humectancy and softness, helping slow the clay’s dry-down so the mask feels less tight while leaving skin feeling smoother and more comfortable.

Cape Chamomile Hydrosol
1 teaspoon
Hydrates and activates the clay into a creamy, spreadable mask while bringing a gentle botanical element that suits the softer, more comforting feel of the formula.

What Else You'll Need
Mixing Bowl & Mixing Utensil
A clean glass or ceramic bowl with a silicone, stainless-steel or similar clean utensil works perfectly.

How to Make

  1. Add the Honey and Cape Chamomile Hydrosol to a clean bowl and mix together.
  2. Add the Bentonite Clay and stir until you have a smooth, creamy paste. If it feels too thick, add a little extra hydrosol a few drops at a time.

How to Use

Guidance

Apply to clean skin with fingers or a brush. Leave on for about 5-10 minutes, rinse with warm water, then follow up with the rest of your skincare routine.

Leave it on until it has mostly set, but is still slightly damp rather than bone-dry and cracking. More time on the skin may cause irritation to sensitive skin.

Make It Yours

  • For A Rooibos Botanical Boost:
Replace the Cape Chamomile Hydrosol with strong, cooled Rooibos Tea for a distinctly South African twist and an added antioxidant-rich botanical element.
  • For A Softer, More Nourishing Mask:
Add ½ teaspoon Kalahari Melon Seed Oil for a creamier, more conditioning mask that feels less drying as the clay sets and leaves skin softer after rinsing.
  • For A Softer Healing Clay Mask:
Replace the Clay with Rhassoul Clay for a smoother, creamier mask with less of bentonite’s characteristic tightening feel.
  • For An Exfoliating Boost:
Add 20 drops of Lactic Acid to turn the mask into a clarifying and exfoliating treatment that helps loosen dull surface skin while the clay absorbs excess oil. Patch test first.

Pro Tips & Storage

  • Can I Make A Clay Face Mask With Just Clay And Water?
Yes. Mix Clay with small amounts of water until you have a smooth, spreadable paste. This gives you a more traditional clay mask that will generally feel more absorbent and drying than the honey version.

  • How Often Can I Use A Bentonite Clay Face Mask?
For most people, once a week is a sensible starting point. Oily skin may enjoy it a little more often, while dry or sensitive-feeling skin may prefer less frequent use or a gentler clay blend. Follow with moisturiser and reduce use if your skin feels tight or irritated.

  • Can I Leave The Honey Out Of A Clay Mask?
Yes. Replace the honey with a little extra water or hydrosol, adding it gradually until you reach the right consistency. Without honey, the mask will dry faster and may feel more tightening, while honey helps keep it softer and more comfortable on the skin.

  • Is Bentonite Clay Good For Your Face?
Bentonite is a highly absorbent cosmetic clay that works particularly well in masks for oily or congested-feeling skin. It helps absorb excess surface oil and leaves the skin feeling thoroughly cleansed, but its strong absorbency can feel drying on some skin types. Mix it with honey, use it for shorter periods or combine it with a gentler clay if you prefer a softer mask.

  • What Is The Difference Between Bentonite, Rhassoul And Kaolin Clay?
Bentonite gives the strongest oil-absorbing and tightening feel. Rhassoul produces a smoother, creamier mask with a gentler feel, while Kaolin is generally the mildest choice for dry or sensitive-feeling skin.

  • Can I Store A Homemade Clay Mask?
We recommend making this mask fresh and using it immediately. Once water, hydrosol or tea is mixed into the clay, the formula becomes water-based and would need an appropriately designed preservative system for longer-term storage.
