Travel Tips: How to Arrive at Your Destination Feeling Your Best

Ah, the festive season, otherwise known to some as the travel season-the thrilling anticipation of new places, new faces, and recharging from a change of pace and scenery. If you're lucky enough to travel in this South African economy, you're likely anticipating some exciting adventures. But before you get to your destination to eat delicious food or enjoy a candle-making party with loved ones, you must get through the journey first.

*A side note: for many, the "perfect" holiday isn't wrapped in flights, road trips, or extravagant plans. And that's okay. Resting at home, enjoying quiet moments, or simply finding time to breathe can be just as fulfilling. Your plans, big or small, are enough. And your experience is a blessing, exactly as it is.*

…Now, back to travel plans. Whether you're buckling in for a 10-hour road trip or a 2-hour flight, travel can take a toll on your body and mind. Dehydrated skin, swollen feet, stiff necks, and sheer exhaustion are just a few challenges I'm sure you are not looking forward to.

The good news is that you can take steps to make sure you arrive feeling (and looking) your absolute best; ready for the memories to be made!

1. How to Address Swollen Feet When Travelling

Sitting for long hours can lead to fluid pooling in your lower extremities, causing swollen, uncomfortable feet and calves. Sure, compression socks are a good solution, but what if you're not ready to embrace the knee-high 80s gym attire look just yet? You may want to try this simple DIY recipe that stimulates blood flow and reduces inflammation.

Refreshing Peppermint Foot Soak

Ingredients:

Warm Water (add enough to fill a bucket/bath to your mid-calves)

1/4 cup Epsom salt (rich in magnesium, which can help reduce swelling)

10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (cooling and stimulates circulation)

Method:

  1. Mix Epsom salt and peppermint oil into warm water.
  2. Soak your feet for 15-20 minutes after your journey.

Pro Tip: If a foot soak isn't possible on the go, you can try making our Peppermint Foot Balm Recipe for a quick, refreshing foot massage.

2. How to Relieve an Aching Back, Neck and Stiff Muscles

Since there isn't much space to move, cramped airline seats or long drives can leave you with back and neck pain and tense muscles. There are various amazing natural remedies you can explore to ease muscle stiffness and improve circulation. You can make our DIY muscle rub balm or try this simple Muscle-Relief Oil.

DIY Muscle-Relief Oil

Ingredients:

40ml Your Chosen Carrier Oil such as coconut, olive, or grapeseed.

6 drops Marjoram Essential Oil

6 drops Helichrysum Essential Oil

6 drops Ginger Essential Oil

Method:

  1. Mix all the ingredients together and pour it into a pipette bottle.
  2. Massage directly into the affected area and other pressure points for pain relief.
  3. Graduate to a stronger mix if the pain relief is not sufficient.
  4. Before full application, apply a small amount to your inner arm and wait 24 hours to check for reactions.
  5. Do not apply near the eyes, nose, mouth or broken skin.
  6. If you are pregnant or nursing, please be sure to consult a healthcare professional before using.
  7. Avoid using on children under 10 years old.
  8. Store the blend away from sunlight and heat.

3. How to Combat Dry, Dehydrated Skin

Aeroplanes and long car, bus or taxi rides are synonymous with skin dehydration. The low humidity of cabin air or stale vehicle ventilation can steal moisture from your skin, leaving it feeling tight or looking like the Kalahari desert. This facial mist will give your skin a quick, refreshing boost during, before or even after your trip. It blends water and rose floral water for soothing hydration and vegetable glycerine for deep moisture retention. The allantoin moisturises and soothes the skin. The hyaluronic acid boosts hydration and plumpness and the rosehip oil provides nourishing antioxidants. Chamomile Roman essential oil has relaxing properties and vitamin E oil offers protection against free radicals.

4. Quick Travel Self-Care Tips

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink water before, during, and after your trip. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you even further.
  2. Move and Stretch: Take regular breaks to stretch or do simple seated exercises to promote circulation. If possible, take every opportunity to stand and walk around, even if it is a few steps to the bathroom and back to your sea.
  3. Pack Healthy Snacks: Nuts, fruits, and seeds are great on-the-go snacks that provide sustained energy. You can also try making this fabulous smoothie recipe in advance.
