Deionised Water is ultra-low-mineral water produced via ion-exchange to remove dissolved ions, salts, and other common contaminants. In cosmetic formulation it's the go-to water phase for emulsions, gels, toners, and cleansers because it minimises unwanted interactions that can destabilise a formula or encourage contamination. It's also useful anywhere mineral deposits are a problem, from humidifiers to lab glassware.

Note: Deionised water doesn’t “expire” in the usual way, but its purity declines after opening. Because it’s essentially “hungry” for ions, it readily absorbs carbon dioxide from air as well as any dust, microbes, or residues from the container. This means it won’t stay perfectly deionised for long once opened. For the best results in sensitive formulations or lab work, purchase as needed and use as fresh as possible.

How to use

Use as the full or partial water phase in emulsions and gels

Storage

Best used fresh. Keep sealed, store in a cool place away from sunlight, and use within 2 weeks of opening.

For sensitive formulations or lab use, aim to use freshly deionised water, or water stored no longer than a few weeks in clean, non-leaching containers. For general cleaning or non-critical purposes, unopened water stored well is usually fine for 3–12 months; once opened, use sooner and avoid introducing contaminants.
