Top 6 Natural Products to boost Men's Health

Many of us go through life misunderstanding our bodies. We feel irritable. We are constantly tired. We become bald. We age and fall from grace. We accept this as a normal part of the journey of life.

BUT.

There are botanicals that have been used to empower our ancestors for centuries. Botanicals that now through science can be investigated and used to support our health. Particularly in regards to managing the levels of vital health related hormones such as: Testosterone.

What is Testosterone and why does it matter?

Testosterone is an androgen (fancy way of saying sex hormone) produced in both men and women. It is classed as one of the sex hormones as it is predominantly produced in our reproductive organs - the testes of men and ovaries of women - and often facilitates the defining characteristics for each sex.

Testosterone is the more dominant and necessary androgen in men, maintaining:

  • Male Reproductive Organs
  • A sense of well being
  • Muscle Mass
  • Bone Density
  • Erythrocyte Count (Red blood cells that carry oxygen to tissues)

How do you know if you have low testosterone?

Low Testosterone for adults is anything below 250 to 300 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dl). This could be considered male hypogonadism.

Low Testosterone signs include (*1)

  • Changes to your emotional stability
  • Decreased Muscle Mass
  • Decreased bone density
  • Difficulty with your reproductive organs
  • Fatigue (despite plenty sleep)
  • Hair Loss
  • Hot Flashes
  • Increased body fat
  • Low Libido
  • Lower blood Count (i.e. Anemia)

What do you do if you have low testosterone?

The signs mentioned above are not sufficient in and of itself to diagnose anybody with a hormonal disorder, but if you do find yourself with some or many of these symptoms, it is essential that you bring it up with your doctor. A proper diagnosis often requires blood tests and a thorough evaluation.

Pharmaceuticals like testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) work well, particularly in severe cases when low testosterone levels impacts the quality of your life. These, however, should only be pursued under medical supervision due to potential side effects. The role of natural remedies is more for daily self - management, improvement over time, and would also be best discussed with a medical professional before consumption.

Two quick notes:

  1. One could create a longer list as there are many herbs traditionally known to boost men's health. Scientific evidence supporting natural products, however, is limited.
  2. Some teas might not be... as palatable as you would prefer. Nevertheless you're going to have to find ways to get it in your system. In such cases, the ideal way would be ingestion via capsules.
Alternatives ways would be mixing your botanical with better tasting treats. For instance, what I do is mix a powdered version of the herb with a baobab pre-biotic that is OUTSTANDING for gut health and overtakes the taste... mostly.

Herbs that naturally boost Testosterone

There is a reason that this herb is 'numero uno' on everybody's list. I could explain to you that Ashwangandha increases testosterone levels, improves sperm quality, and enhances exercise performance.

But you don't have to take my word for it, here's a quote from a recent scientific study on the subject (*2): "Compared to placebo, ashwagandha root extract supplementation was associated with a statistically significant increase in the total DISF‐M scores confidence interval... It was also associated with a statistically significant increase in serum testosterone levels."

Note: DISF-M means Derogatis Interview for Sexual Functioning - Male. It is a standardized questionnaire used to assess male sexual function.

Fenugreek is typically known for promoting hair growth. It is high in Protein, Iron, Vitamins B and C. A Double Blind Clinical Study (*3) using Furosap - a Fenugreek Seed Extract - also indicated that it holds the potential to increase testosterone levels:

"Furosap supplementation significantly increased mean lean body mass and fat-free mass compared to subjects receiving placebo. Additionally, Furosap-treated subjects elevated serum testosterone levels. Furosap supplemented subjects also exhibited a tendency towards lowering blood pressure during exhaustion. No adverse reports were reported."

It is believed that Gokshura (otherwise known as Tribulus Terrestris) can indirectly enhance testosterone production by influencing the hormonal system that regulates reproductive and hormonal health.

It's important to note however that research regarding Gokshura is still very much in its infancy and requires further studies. That said, a recent study did note that (*4): "Findings of the present study validate the traditional use of T. terrestris as a sexual enhancer in the management of sexual dysfunction in males."

Herbs for Supporting Men's Health

The below botanicals are all particularly useful in promoting and supporting health in men. Though that's not to say that they don't also have benefits for women too :)

Saw Palmetto Berries has shown evidence in assisting with health issues particular to older men. That being male pattern baldness and enlarged prostates.

A study (*5) stated: "Evidence suggests that saw palmetto may have a significant effect on urinary flow rates and symptom scores compared to placebo in men with lower urinary tract symptoms."

Another study (*6) found Saw Palmetto useful with hair loss and Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), stating: "Natural ingredients like pumpkin seed oilsaw palmetto, melatonin extract, caffeine extract, and rosemary oil were effective in treating AGA either when compared to baseline or a definite AGA Western medication, such as minoxidil. These natural agents also presented minimal side effects."

Siberian Ginseng is known for improving stamina with evidence shown in this study. (*7) Their findings indicate that Siberian Ginseng helps lower fat in the body by making lipase improve in their functioning. Lipase breaks down fat in the cells while also helping muscles get more energy. This means your body can use fat better and make more energy, helping you stay healthy.

Maca root does not have evidence for improving testosterone levels but does have long standing evidence for improving libido. This was affirmed in a study (*8) on participants who had SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction.
The study found: "Maca was well tolerated. Maca root may alleviate SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, and there may be a dose-related effect. Maca may also have a beneficial effect on libido."
-Note: This tastes AMAZING! You'll be surprised.

Are you set for life with these herbs?

For the best results, do use these botanicals consistently in their recommended dosages. However, do keep in mind that their effectiveness may vary from person to person.

A final note: This is not where your journey towards intentionally healthier living should end, but begin. Your health is a impacted by a wide variety of factors. The above suggested botanicals are great for assisting in, bettering or boosting your overall health, but they are not cure-alls. They work best, like most remedies, when used in combination with a good-diet and regular exercise.
