Massage Truffles
Continuing in the spirit of gifting and massages (last week we covered DIY Soy Wax Massage Candles), let’s chat about massage truffles. Massage truffles are similar to lotion bars, but are smaller in size, hence the name truffle, and have a higher concentration of beneficial oils to target specific needs. They are easy to make and are a cute gift to give. Just make sure to label them ‘not for eating’!
Use your truffles to massage sore muscles, soothe burnt or irritated skin, or cool your skin down after a hot day. Massage truffles are conveniently travel sized, so they are ideal to take with you on holiday.
The key ingredients in a massage truffle, apart from the base of cocoa butter and beeswax, are the essential oils used. Go for stimulating oils such as cinnamon, cassia and black pepper, cooling elements like peppermint oil and menthol crystals, healing oils such as frankincense and myrrh and anti-inflammatory oils such as helichrysum, lavender and copaiba balsam.
Here are three great recipes to try. You can of course use any of your favourite essential oils in place of the ones listed below. You can also use a vegan wax in place of the beeswax.
Cooling Choc Mint Massage Truffles
Try these super simple to make cooling massage truffles - perfect after a hot, sweaty day.
20g cocoa butter
20g beeswax
10g grapeseed oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
8 drops cassia essential oil
Melt the cocoa butter, beeswax, and grapeseed oil in a hot water bath. Add the essential oils and menthol crystals. Pour into small molds (silicone is best) and leave to set up in the fridge before removing. To use, massage into sore muscles and wait a couple minutes for the cooling sensation to set in.
Herbal Massage Truffles For Pain Relief
These herbaceous massage truffles are great for targeting painful muscles and joints. The addition of St John’s Wort oil makes them anti-inflammatory and soothing, while the special essential oils are healing.
3 T cocoa butter
4 T beeswax
2 T St John’s wort infused oil
1 T sunflower oil
3 T coconut oil
¼ tsp vitamin E oil
5 drops frankincense essential oil
5 drops cinnamon essential oil
1 drop myrrh essential oil
1 drop vetiver essential oil
Melt all the ingredients except the Vitamin E oil and the essential oils together in a hot water bath. Once the oil mixture has melted, remove from the heat and stir in the Vitamin E oil and essential oils. Pour into molds and leave to set before using.
Romantic Massage Truffles
20g cocoa butter (you may want to use a refined cocoa butter here so the rich chocolate scent doesn't interfere with the essential oils)
20g beeswax
10g grapeseed oil
5 drops jasmine essential oil
3 drops neroli essential oil
5 drops ylang ylang essential oil
Melt the cocoa butter, beeswax, and grapeseed oil in a hot water bath. Add the essential oils and stir. Pour into small molds (silicone is best) and leave to set up in the fridge before removing. To use, massage into sore muscles and wait a couple minutes for the cooling sensation to set in.
We hope you enjoy these wonderful little massage truffles, and let us know if you experiment with other oils.

Hi Clea, I don’t so that will have to go on the to-do list! But you could try replacing the beeswax with soy wax :)
Do you have a recipe for vegan truffles? Thanks!
Hi Nabilla, yes g is for grams. You can also use mils if you prefer.
Essential oils do differ in weight so I’ve changed the measurements to drops. Hope that helps!
Is this g for grams? How much drops is 5g of essential oils?
