A Simple DIY Balm for Healthy Facial Hair (Beard to Eyebrows)

A Simple DIY Balm for Healthy Facial Hair (Beard to Eyebrows)

Cayla Mandean

If you're reading this, chances are you either have a beard yourself or know someone who does.

I may not have personal beard experience, but I've seen firsthand the difference between a well-cared-for beard and one that's been neglected. After making a beard oil for my brother, I noticed how much healthier and fuller his beard looked, and so did everyone else.

Soon, he was getting compliments from friends and family, and when they asked about his secret, he shared it proudly: a beard oil made from Essentially Natural ingredients and a little sisterly magic.

The beard oil I made didn't just smell amazing; it hydrated, softened, tamed, and supported healthy beard growth. I simply followed our DIY beard oil guide, then customised the recipe with my favourite oils to achieve the results I wanted. And honestly, the results spoke for themselves.

So why use a beard oil? As I alluded to before, it delivers results. Beard oils are perfect for daily hydration and nourishment. They are easy to apply, softening hair strands, reducing itchiness, and supporting healthy growth without leaving a heavy residue. Oils are also ideal for applying directly after showering.

Then I had a thought: what if all those benefits could come in a product which is travel-friendly, fuss-free, versatile, and spill-proof? That's when the idea for a DIY Beard Balm hit me.

Balms combine all the nourishing properties of oils with added structure and hold. The wax used in balms also helps shape your beard and provide extra protection against environmental stressors. It's perfect for anyone who wants conditioning and control in one easy-to-use product.

It is also simple to make at home!

While it's ideal for husbands, brothers, and friends, it's so nourishing that girlfriends and mothers may find themselves sneaking it for their eyebrows too.

Yes… You read that right!

The same formula that conditions beards has the potential to even encourage eyebrow growth and control. So perhaps we shouldn't just call it a beard balm, but a facial hair conditioning balm.

Solid in form yet melts effortlessly into the warmth of your hands, it transforms into just the right amount of oils to soften, nourish, and moisturise both beards and brows.

what beard products do I need

DIY Facial Hair Conditioning Balm

Ingredients

Phase A

19.00% Jojoba Oil (moisturises without clogging pores, softens hair for easier grooming)

30.00% Rice Bran Oil (rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, nourishes and strengthens hair, soothes irritation)

25.00% Argan Oil (deeply hydrates, adds shine, reduces frizz, supports healthy growth and manageability)

5.00% Broccoli Seed Oil (lightweight, smooths and tames hair, adds natural shine, improves manageability)

18.00% Beeswax (Wax of choice) (provides hold and locks in moisture)

Phase B

1.50% Vitamin E Oil (antioxidant, protects against damage, helps to extend shelf life)

0.70% Cedarwood Essential Oil (earthy scent, may help stimulate follicles, reduces itchiness and dryness)

0.80% Rosemary Essential Oil (boosts circulation, encourages stronger, fuller hair growth)

Method

  1. Gently mix the ingredients from Phase A and heat to 75°C, making sure all waxes are fully melted.
  2. Once melted, blend until smooth, then let the mixture cool to about 65°C.
  3. Add Phase B to Phase A and stir gently until fully combined. Work quickly and keep the mixture just warm enough to stay liquid while pouring into containers.
  4. Let the product cool to below 25°C before sealing. As it cools, small gaps may form, so you may need to top up before closing.

You may note that I’ve added a higher percentage of beeswax in this recipe. This isn’t just for texture; it helps the balm hold up during travel, even in warmer climates where it might otherwise melt. Of course, you can adjust the beeswax depending on your local weather or how you plan to store it. This allows you to adapt it perfectly to your needs.

Honestly, this balm is incredibly easy to make, yet each ingredient is rich in purpose, and you’ll be amazed at what this simple formula can do.

To take your beard care routine to the next level, consider exfoliating the skin underneath once or twice a week, in addition to applying your beard balm daily.

Here’s a simple exfoliating treatment you can make at home to help prevent ingrown hairs and even reduce blackheads.

DIY Exfoliating Beard Treatment

Ingredients:

½ tsp  Activated Charcoal

½ tsp  Green Clay

1 tsp  Kaolin Clay

¼ tsp  Vegetable Glycerine (optional but recommended)

Dash of Rose Water or Distilled Water to form a paste

Method:

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a small dish.
  2. Apply evenly to clean skin, avoiding eyes and lips.
  3. Leave on for 8–15 minutes. Don’t let it dry completely.
  4. Rinse off with warm water, using gentle circular motions to enhance exfoliation.
  5. Follow with a hydrosol or moisturiser.

Tips for Best Results

  • As you apply the mask, gently massage it in circular motions before letting it set slightly to enhance its mild exfoliating effect.
  • Keep the mask slightly damp. Don’t let it dry completely. If it becomes flaky or crumbly, it can start pulling moisture from your skin instead of delivering its minerals.
  • Apply generously under the beard and across your face and neck to maximise benefits. This not only nourishes the skin but can also help brighten your complexion and reduce blackheads.
