INCI: Cetyl alcohol

Essentially Natural Vegetable Cetyl Alcohol is a plant-derived fatty alcohol used to thicken and improve the texture of cosmetic and household formulations. It adds body, viscosity, and a smooth, silky slip to creams, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, and body washes, without the heavy, waxy drag that some waxes can create. It is especially useful for creating richer, more stable emulsions and more luxurious hair and body products. This ingredient is ECOCERT and COSMOS approved and is halal certified.

Also available in Sample Sizes.

This product is certified: Vegan and Beauty Without Cruelty.

Q: Is cetyl alcohol the same as ethanol or rubbing alcohol?
A: No. Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol used for texture and conditioning in cosmetics. It is not the same as ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and is not used as a disinfectant.

Q: Will cetyl alcohol make my creams feel waxy?
A: Used well, it typically creates a silky, creamy texture and reduces tackiness. Very high levels can feel heavier, so adjust based on the texture you want.

Q: Can I use cetyl alcohol in whipped body butter?
A: Yes. It can help improve structure and increase the melting point, which is useful for a more stable whipped texture.

Q: Is this ingredient natural?
A: It is derived from vegetable oils and is ECOCERT and COSMOS approved, making it a popular choice for natural-style formulations.

Can I use this as a thickener in a lip oil? If so, how and when should I add it in?

Essentially Natural

Hi there Hailey,

Thank you for reaching out <3

Vegetable Cetyle Alcohol could be used as a thickener in a lip oil, but it’s not the best option. Cetyl alcohol is more of a fatty stabiliser and emollient rather than a true oil thickener. It works best in emulsions, where it helps with viscosity and texture.

If you'd like to try it, you would need to:
- Melt it with your oil phase (since it’s solid at room temperature).
- Use a small amount (around 1–3%) to avoid a waxy feel.
- Test out small batches first, because it can potentially create a waxy feel rather than the glossy texture expected in lip oils.

Generally to thicken oils we'd suggest to add Castor Oil.

We hope that helps :)

Kindest Regards,
Essentially Natural Support
