What You'll Need

Sugar Squalane (Lightweight Skin & Hair Emollient) - Essentially Natural
Recipe Quantity: 15ml
Recipe Percentage (for scaling): 59.88%
The star of our serum! Sugar Squalane gives this blend its wonderfully light, silky feel while helping to soften the skin and reduce moisture loss. Unlike many richer botanical oils, it spreads effortlessly and leaves a smooth, elegant finish without feeling heavy. Our Sugar Squalane is produced through plant-sugar fermentation, offering an animal-free source of this versatile emollient.

Red Raspberry Seed Oil (Cold Pressed) - Essentially Natural
Recipe Quantity: 5ml
Recipe Percentage (for scaling): 19.96%
A lovely addition to facial skincare, Red Raspberry Seed Oil is naturally rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidant compounds. It brings botanical nourishment to the blend, helping skin feel softer, smoother and more comfortable.

Marula Oil (Cold Pressed) - Essentially Natural
Recipe Quantity: 5ml
Recipe Percentage (for scaling): 19.96%
Pressed from the nuts of the African marula tree, this beautiful botanical oil adds a little extra richness and conditioning to our serum. Its fatty acid profile helps support a supple skin feel, complementing Squalane's lightweight finish.

Vitamin E Oil (d-Mixed Tocopherol) - Essentially Natural
Recipe Quantity: 1 drop (approximately 0.05ml)
Recipe Percentage (for scaling): 0.20%
A small but useful addition. Vitamin E provides antioxidant support to the oil blend, helping protect its oils against oxidation while contributing to the formula's skin-conditioning qualities.

What Else You'll Need

• 30ml Amber Glass Aromatherapy Bottle with Pipette - Black & Gold Collar (18/78) (1 bottle)

• A clean, completely dry mixing container

• Measuring pipettes or syringes

• A small funnel (optional)

Recipe quantities make approximately 25ml of finished serum (around 25.05ml including Vitamin E).

Percentages are approximate, calculated by volume using 1 drop of Vitamin E as 0.05ml. Actual drop size varies by dropper and liquid.

How to Make

  1. Make sure your bottle, mixing container and utensils are clean and completely dry. Because this is an oil-only serum, we don't want to introduce any water into the finished blend.
  2. Measure 15ml Sugar Squalane, 5ml Red Raspberry Seed Oil and 5ml Marula Oil into your mixing container.
  3. Add 1 drop of Vitamin E Oil and stir gently until everything is evenly combined. No heating required!
  4. Carefully transfer your serum into the 30ml pipette bottle, secure the lid and label it with the date it was made. Your serum is ready to enjoy.

How to Use

Guidance

After cleansing, warm approximately 2–3 drops of serum between your fingertips and gently press or massage into your face and neck.

For a particularly lovely finish, apply after a water-based hydrating serum or toner while your skin is still slightly damp. Squalane helps soften and condition the skin while reducing moisture loss.

Use once or twice daily according to your skin's needs. A little goes a long way, so start with just a few drops and add more only if needed.

Patch test before first use, particularly if your skin is sensitive. Avoid direct contact with the eyes and discontinue use if irritation occurs. During the day, follow with your usual broad-spectrum sunscreen, as this serum does not provide sun protection.

Make It Yours

  • For An Even Silkier Finish:
Prefer an especially lightweight facial oil? Increase the Sugar Squalane to 18ml, keep the Red Raspberry Seed Oil at 5ml and reduce the Marula Oil to 2ml. You'll have the same 25ml blend, but with an even greater emphasis on Squalane's wonderfully smooth, non-heavy skin feel.
  • For A Richer Evening Serum:
If your skin enjoys something a little more nourishing at night, try 10ml Sugar Squalane, 10ml Marula Oil and 5ml Red Raspberry Seed Oil. The additional Marula Oil gives the blend a richer, more cushioning feel while retaining Squalane's lovely slip.
  • For A Simple Two-Oil Serum:
Sometimes less really is more. Combine 20ml Sugar Squalane with 5ml Marula Oil for a beautifully straightforward facial oil. Add your usual drop of Vitamin E, mix and bottle. Perfect when you want uncomplicated skincare with a smooth, silky finish.
  • For Soft, Smooth Hair Ends:
There's no reason your facial serum can't lend a hand elsewhere! Warm a single drop of the original blend between your palms and lightly smooth over dry hair ends or flyaways. Sugar Squalane adds slip and softness without the heavier feel of many traditional hair oils. Start sparingly, especially on fine hair.

For the first three variations, keep Vitamin E at 1 drop per approximately 25ml batch.

Pro Tips & Storage

  • What Makes Sugar Squalane So Special?
Squalane is a lightweight, highly stable emollient that helps soften skin and reduce moisture loss without a heavy, oily finish. Our Sugar Squalane is made through fermentation using plant-derived sugars, including corn-derived glucose. Although it comes from a different source than Olive Squalane, the finished ingredient has the same INCI name: Squalane.

It's particularly useful in facial oils because it can make richer botanical blends feel lighter and more elegant on the skin.

  • Will This Serum Make My Skin Feel Greasy?
That's exactly what we've tried to avoid with this blend! Sugar Squalane makes up most of the formula, helping give it a lightweight, silky finish. The Marula and Red Raspberry Seed Oils add a little more richness and conditioning.

Of course, everyone's skin is different. If you have oily or combination skin, start with just 1–2 drops and see how your skin feels before adding more.

  • Can I Use This Serum Morning And Night?
Absolutely. Apply a few drops after cleansing and any water-based skincare products.

In the morning, allow the serum to settle before applying your sunscreen. Remember that while these botanical oils can be valuable skincare ingredients, they are not substitutes for properly formulated sun protection.

  • Does An Oil-Based Serum Need A Preservative?
This particular recipe doesn't require a conventional broad-spectrum preservative because it contains no water. Microorganisms generally need available water to grow, which is why oil-only formulations are treated differently from water-based creams and lotions.

Vitamin E helps protect oils against oxidation, but it is an antioxidant, not an antimicrobial preservative. Always use clean, dry equipment and avoid introducing moisture into the bottle.

  • Can I Add Aloe Vera, Hydrosol Or Hyaluronic Acid To This Serum?
Not directly into the bottle. Aloe Vera gels, hydrosols and most Hyaluronic Acid serums are water-based, so they won't simply blend into this oil-only formula. Introducing water would also change its preservation requirements.

Instead, apply your favourite water-based hydrator first, then follow with a few drops of the oil serum. You'll enjoy the benefits of both without complicating the formula.

  • How Should I Store My Homemade Facial Serum?
Store your serum tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat. An amber glass bottle is ideal for helping protect the more delicate botanical oils from light.

The finished blend's freshness depends on the quality, age and storage conditions of its ingredients, particularly the botanical oils. Make small batches, use the serum while fresh and never beyond the earliest expiry date of the oils used. Discard it if you notice an unusual odour or other signs of deterioration.

A precise shelf life for the finished homemade blend cannot be guaranteed without appropriate stability testing.
