Dry Scalp Rescue Serum

This week’s DIY is a lightweight scalp serum that focuses on hydrating the scalp itself - helping ease dryness and visible flakes without leaving hair overloaded. Because dry hair and a dry scalp aren’t always the same thing.

Shelf life
Use within 3–6 months when preserved with Geogard 221. Without a preservative, store in the fridge and use within 5–7 days.

What You'll Need

Aloe vera liquid gel
1 tablespoon
Provides lightweight hydration while helping soothe and refresh a dry scalp.

Betaine
1 teaspoon
A naturally derived humectant that helps the scalp attract and retain moisture for longer-lasting hydration.

D-Panthenol
¼ teaspoon
Supports the scalp's natural moisture barrier while leaving hair feeling softer and smoother.

How to Make

  1. Fill a clean cup under halfway with distilled water.
  2. Add in the aloe vera liquid gel, betaine and panthenol (if using Geogard 221, add here too).
  3. Mix well till dissolved. If the panthenol is having trouble dissolving, slightly warm the water in a microwave or in a double boiler.
  4. Bottle in a dark pipette bottle. This makes just under 150ml - so you’ll have plenty to use (or share).
Be sure to have a clean bottle or two ready before you start.
  5. Store in a cool, dark place.

How to Use

Guidance

Part your hair and apply a few drops directly to the scalp using the pipette. Gently massage in with your fingertips until absorbed.

Use after washing or whenever your scalp feels dry between washes.

Make It Yours

  • For a Longer Shelf-Life:
Add 20 drops Geogard 221 to preserve your serum for longer.
  • For Lightweight Moisture Lock:
Pre-mix ½ teaspoon Emolid CC with 1 teaspoon OliveM 300, then stir into your serum to help lock in hydration without leaving the scalp greasy.
  • For Extra Scalp Support:
Stir in ¼ teaspoon Inulin to help support the scalp's natural microbiome.
  • For Extra Scalp Stimulation
Dissolve a pinch (⅛ teaspoon) of Caffeine Powder in 1 teaspoon hot water, then stir into your serum.

Pro Tips & Storage

  • Do I need to patch test?
Yes. Patch test before first use and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

  • Is this for dry scalp or dandruff?
This serum is designed for dry scalps and small, powdery flakes caused by dryness. If your scalp is oily, very itchy, inflamed, or has larger yellow flakes, it may be dandruff rather than dry scalp.

  • How often should I use it?
Apply whenever your scalp feels dry or flaky between washes.

  • How do I apply it?
Part your hair and apply a few drops directly to the scalp, not through the lengths of your hair.

  • Can I use it elsewhere?
Yes. This hydrating serum can also be applied to dry areas of skin for soothing hydration.
