Starting Your Own Skincare Business? Intention Matters Just as Much as Action
Cayla MandeanThe way people experience and support a brand is not only shaped by the value they find in the product, but by how a business is actually run. From the inside out. How people are made to feel before, during and after they engage with you, not just your product, but you as a founder, as a team, as a brand.
Yes, people notice.
They notice how a brand responds when something goes wrong. They notice if they feel heard, rushed, valued, or forgotten. Customers may not always be able to articulate it, but they can feel how a business is run.
And that feeling matters more than most business owners realise.
In those details, certain founders stand out, not because they focus only on the external, but because they lead from within. Their values shape both small and significant decisions, consistently and without separation.
For Juliet Bowley-Urquhart, Founder of ESQ Skincare, that is clear.
There is a consistency in how she shows up - honest, passionate, and grounded in integrity. It is evident that ESQ Skincare was never built or operated in response to external noise or profit alone, but from something far more internal and intentional. What you sense is not a brand trying to appear a certain way, but a brand that simply is, and that alignment carries through consistently, both in how it shows up externally and how it is held internally.
And that raises a question every founder must sit with: Am I operating with true authenticity, or trying to signal it?
This is the story of ESQ Skincare.
Meet Juliet Bowley-Urquhart: Her Life Before ESQ Skincare
Before ESQ Skincare existed, Juliet’s world was shaped by two very different disciplines: luxury hospitality and science.
She spent years working in luxury hospitality and wine, primarily as a sommelier and beverage manager across hotels and establishments in South Africa and abroad. It was an environment defined by detail, sensory experience, and human connection.
Hospitality, she explains, taught her how deeply personal “luxury” can be when it is done properly. It is not only about the product itself, but about how someone feels in the presence of care. That understanding of everyday experience later became central to how she thinks about skincare as part of a daily ritual, not just a product.
Alongside this, her academic background in Microbiology and Biochemistry shaped another layer of her thinking. She was always drawn to the science behind things, especially skincare, and so her journey to become a Cosmetic Scientist began.
Ingredients, formulations, and skin physiology were a natural point of curiosity. Not from a trend perspective, but from a desire to understand what actually works beneath all the hype and marketing claims.
She describes her approach to formulation from both a scientific and emotional perspective:
“Scientifically, I am very particular about ingredient percentages, stability, compatibility, and efficacy. I care deeply about whether ingredients are included at levels that can genuinely make a difference to the skin. I never wanted ESQ Skincare to rely on empty marketing claims. Safety, stability, and long-term skin compatibility are non-negotiable for me.
At the same time, my hospitality background taught me the importance of experience. A product should not only work, it should feel beautiful to use. Texture, absorption, scent, packaging, and ritual all matter.”
From this intersection, she began to ask herself:
What if skincare could be scientific and luxurious, and so much more?
That question became the foundation of ESQ Skincare.
She explains:
“I wanted to create skincare that respected the skin barrier, used high-quality natural ingredients, and incorporated clinically studied actives that could visibly support ageing skin.
There was also a gap in education. I felt many consumers were overwhelmed by skincare marketing and unsure what actually worked. I wanted ESQ Skincare to be a brand that educated customers honestly and empowered them to interpret ingredients and claims for themselves.”
In an industry saturated with noise, confusion often replaces clarity, and we at Essentially Natural can’t help but admire her idea to bring education to the forefront with her Anti-Ageing Ingredient Bible.
She says:
“It came from seeing how overwhelmed people felt by skincare information online. I wanted to create something educational, approachable, and empowering. The guide helps people understand ingredients commonly used in anti-ageing skincare, how they support the skin, and what benefits they can realistically expect, so they can make more informed choices in their daily routines.”
Now this is something we stand behind: empowering consumers to make conscious choices.
The Beginning: How to Turn Curiosity Into Commitment
The early days of ESQ Skincare were not defined by a launch plan, but by immersion.
Juliet formally studied cosmetic chemistry while still working full-time. Her evenings were spent creating products she genuinely believed in and wanted to use herself.
At first, it wasn’t about building a business. It was about building something she could stand behind.
She describes:
“I wanted to build something meaningful, something that reflected my love for science, nature, luxury, and helping people feel confident in their skin.
I became deeply invested in understanding why certain ingredients worked, what concentrations were truly effective, and how to formulate products that could support healthy ageing without compromising the integrity of the skin. There was also a very emotional side to it. Starting something of your own requires vulnerability. There is a lot of self-doubt in the beginning because you are building something from nothing and hoping people connect with your vision.
I remember making small batches, testing formulations repeatedly, refining textures and scents, and becoming obsessed with every detail. ESQ Skincare was never created simply to sell products. It was created because I genuinely wanted to offer skincare that felt honest, luxurious, and results-driven.”
The more she studied, the more she realised that nature offered extraordinary possibilities for skincare. But she also recognised something equally important. Natural ingredients are only as effective as the way they are formulated.
This became a defining moment in her thinking.
She explains:
“Natural ingredients are incredibly complex. Plant oils, extracts, antioxidants, and peptides can offer beautiful benefits when properly formulated. But I also realised that natural alone is not enough. Formulation matters enormously. That conviction shaped the entire philosophy of ESQ Skincare. I never wanted to formulate from fear or extremes. I wanted to formulate responsibly, thoughtfully, and scientifically.
To me, natural skincare should not mean compromising on efficacy. It should mean working with ingredients that support the skin in a balanced, intelligent way.”
Juliet’s formulation philosophy is reflected in the natural ingredients she consistently returns to.
Hyaluronic acid remains one of her favourites because healthy, hydrated skin forms the foundation for almost every other aspect of skin function. She is equally passionate about peptides, which support ageing skin gently and intelligently without compromising barrier health.
She also regularly formulates with powerful antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. These ingredients help protect the skin against environmental stressors while supporting overall skin vitality.
Alongside these clinically studied actives, Juliet shares:
“I also love working with South African botanicals like baobab oil because they bring both beautiful sensory qualities and skin-nourishing benefits.”
Rooibos is another ingredient she returns to often. Rich in antioxidants and naturally soothing, it helps calm stressed skin while offering protection against environmental damage.
She is equally inspired by the remarkable biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom and the unique potential of fynbos botanicals.
