Moisturising Body Butter Formula
Essentially NaturalBody butters are especially beneficial for dry skin, as they contain rich ingredients that help to lock in moisture. The main components of body butter are:
- Butters: Ingredients derived from plants like shea butter, cocoa butter, or mango butter to provide a rich, creamy texture.
- Oils: Botanical oils like coconut, almond, or jojoba oil are added for their skin-benefiting properties and to achieve the desired consistency.
- Extracts: Plant extracts can be included to provide additional benefits like antioxidants or skin-soothing properties.
- Thickeners: Ingredients that help create the desired thickness and feel on the skin.
- Antioxidants: These help extend the shelf life by preventing oxidation.
- Fragrances: Essential oils can be added for a pleasant scent and aromatherapy benefits.
- Preservatives (optional): Oil-based preservatives may be needed to prevent microbial growth.
This moisturising body butter is made through a hot process without any water, resulting in an anhydrous (waterless) formulation.

Equipment Needed:
- Scales
- Glass beakers / stainless steel bowls
- Hot plate
- Thermometer
- Water bath or double boiler
- Spatulas, stainless steel spoons and pipettes
- Protective gloves
- Suitable lidded jar
Method:
- Melt the coconut oil, mango butter and cocoa butter in a water bath.
- After this blend is melted, stop heating and add the avocado oil, the St John's Wort extract and tocopherol and blend gently with a spatula or glass rod.
- Continue gentle blending as the blend cools to 35 degrees centigrade, then add the geranium essential oil.
- As the butter cools down, the viscosity increases. Continue stirring until the butter reaches a consistency where you can make traces with your spatula. This is the consistency of our butter at this point.
- Pour the butter into the jar and refridgerate.
