Introduce a Renaissance classic to your cosmetics, perfumery, food and even DIY apothecary. Native to the Mediterranean, orris root comes from the rhizomes of Iris germanica, traditionally harvested, peeled and then aged to develop its characteristic violet-like scent. In Europe, orris root has been a star of perfumery, cosmetics and folk practices since the Renaissance - where it was prized as a powerful fixative and flavouring, used in herbal tooth powders and breath fresheners, noted historically for soothing digestion and coughs. Historically, it was also used as a gentle expectorant and diuretic, and folded into “cleansing” blends - encouraging the liver, bowel and lymphatic system to remove toxins more effectively.
♡ Why we love it: With modern science we are able to explore its magic - rich in irones (the delicate violet fragrance), natural starch for a soft, silky feel, as well as tannins and resins for mild astringency and those prized fixative qualities - meaning it absorbs scent and releases it slowly. Together, these make it a beautiful base in perfumery powders and sachets, and - when tinctured - a soft, long-lasting base note that enhances and stabilises floral scents. Culinarily, it still pops up in certain spirits and confectioneries, while at home it shines in potpourris, drawer sachets and scented crafts for that lingering inviting aroma.
For beauty, orris root lends gentle fragrance and slip to face and body powders, bath salts and dry shampoos.
