What You'll Need

St John's Wort
2-3 tablespoons
Creates a deeply soothing oil for stressed, redness-prone skin. Research suggests its hyperforin-rich extracts may help calm irritation, support skin resilience and provide antimicrobial benefits.

Calendula Flowers Dried
2-3 tablespoons
Soothes visible redness and irritation, while clinical research suggests Calendula may also improve hydration and support recovery of the skin's protective barrier.

Sweet Almond Oil
1 cup
A wonderfully versatile carrier oil that provides a stable, skin-softening base for botanical maceration. Research suggests Sweet Almond Oil is particularly effective at extracting beneficial compounds from St John's Wort.

How to Make

  1. Wash and sanitise a glass jar of at least 300 ml, a spoon and a storage bottle, then allow everything to dry completely. Any water left behind can significantly shorten the oil's shelf life.
  2. Lightly crumble the dried Calendula Flowers and St John’s Wort between your fingers to expose more surface area, but do not grind them into a fine powder, as this will make the oil difficult to filter.
  3. Add the botanicals to the jar and pour over the Sweet Almond Oil, stirring gently to release trapped air and ensure all of the plant material is fully submerged.
  4. Seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark cupboard for 21–28 days, gently turning or swirling the jar once each day. If the botanicals absorb oil and rise above the surface, top up with enough oil to cover them again.
  5. Pour the infusion through tightly woven muslin or a clean filter cloth, gently pressing the botanicals to recover as much oil as possible. Leave the strained oil to stand for 24 hours, then carefully decant it away from any sediment.
  6. If using, stir in the Vitamin E, mix well, then transfer the finished oil to a clean amber bottle. Store in a cool, dark place.

How to Use

Guidance

Warm a few drops between your palms and apply a thin layer to clean skin wherever needed. Best used in the evening as part of your skincare routine.

This infusion also makes a wonderful ingredient in skin-soothing body butters, lotions and creams, and pairs particularly well with Aloe Vera Liquid Gel.

Make It Yours

  • For A Longer Shelf Life:
Add 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil to help slow oxidation and extend the shelf life of your botanical oil to around 12 months when stored correctly.
  • For A Lighter Facial Oil
Replace ½ of the Sweet Almond Oil with MCT Oil
a lighter, faster-absorbing facial oil with a silky, less rich finish.
  • For A Warm Botanical Aroma:
Add ½ teaspoon Copaiba Balsam Essential Oil to the finished oil for a warm, comforting aroma and additional soothing properties, mixing thoroughly before bottling.

Pro Tips & Storage

  • Will this oil make my skin sensitive to the sun?

St John’s Wort contains naturally photosensitising compounds, so use the oil mainly in the evening and avoid applying it immediately before prolonged sun exposure. Keep treated areas covered or protected with sunscreen during the day.

  • Can I make the infusion more quickly?

Yes. Place the sealed jar in a warm water bath maintained at approximately 38–40°C for 6–8 hours, gently swirling it occasionally, then leave it in a dark cupboard for another 5–7 days before straining. Keep the lid tightly closed and ensure no water enters the jar.

  • Why can’t I heat it directly on the stovetop?

Direct stovetop heat is difficult to control and can quickly overheat the oil, accelerate oxidation and degrade delicate botanical compounds - particularly St John’s Wort’s hyperforin. One long, gently warmed infusion is preferable to boiling the oil or giving it repeated bursts of high heat.

  • Can I use it on my face?

Yes, provided your skin tolerates the ingredients. Apply a few drops as an evening facial oil, or replace part of the Sweet Almond Oil with MCT Oil for a lighter finish. Patch test first and avoid the eye area.

  • Can I use it on a new scar?

Research on Calendula and St John’s Wort suggests they may support skin during the early stages of surgical healing and help improve the appearance and comfort of newly forming scars.
For a homemade maceration, wait until the incision is fully closed, dry and free from drainage, then only begin once your doctor is happy for you to apply oils to the area.

  • Can I apply it to open cuts or burns?

No. This homemade infusion is not sterile and should not be used on open, bleeding, weeping or infected skin, or on fresh burns. Seek appropriate medical care and reserve the oil for intact or completely closed skin.
