Retinoids are a class of Vitamin A derivatives and are used to treat photodamaged skin and slow down the breakdown of collagen in the skin. Vitamin A helps the skin rejuvenate and promotes collagen and elastin production by stimulating fibroblasts (the skin cells that produce collagen), making the skin appear firmer and more plump. You may have come across retinol or another Vitamin A derivative in various anti aging products. And now you can make your own!
While retinol is typically fairly harsh on skins, Vitamin A palmitate (or retinyl palmitate as it is otherwise known) is the weakest retinoid and therefore ideal for those with sensitive skins. When used in low concentrations it can be used up to every day without irritation.

Hi Sarah,
Including a few drops of an Oil like Rosehip or Essential Oil like Frankincense would be good :)
Just do keep in mind that the total percentage of Essential Oils should be no higher than 0.5% if you intend on using this around the eye and/ or sensitive skin, and always patch test!
Happy Formulating!

Hi, I would like to know if I can add a few drops of essential oils (e.g. Rosehip or Frankincense) to the above recipe without changing the percentages given.
Hi Adekoya, I’m glad you are enjoying the articles.
We only stock retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A palmitate), which is a gentle retinoid. You can use it with other lightening agents and acids, but I would advise to use those ingredients in sparing quantities so as to not irritate the skin. Use it at night and make sure to use sunscreen during the day to protect your skin.
Hi there…I just came across your page and I must say have learnt a lot today,I am a formulator but I have never worked with retinoids before,my questions are:What are the different types of retinoids we have 2.Is it possible to add retinoids or use retinoid in a lightening cream or 3.How well does retinoids combine with other skin lightening actives?
Your response will really go a long way for me
Hi Chanel, yes sure
