Tartaric acid is found naturally in fruits, various plants, as well as in wine, and is a by-product of the wine industry. It is a versatile ingredient, used extensively in the food industry as an acidulant and additive. It gives a sharp, tangy taste and can be added to jellies, beverages, gelatin and other foods.
Tartaric acid belongs to the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) family, alongside ascorbic, citric, glycolic, lactic and malic acids.
It has a salt, potassium bitartrate, commonly known as cream of tartar.
In skincare it is used as a gentle exfoliating acid, and can be utilised in exfoliants, toners, serums and other personal care products.

How to use tartaric acid
Like with any acid, care should be taken when applying tartaric acid. It is always best to use it heavily diluted and to perform a skin patch test first.
Usage amounts can vary: 1-10%
Water soluble; dissolve in the water phase.
