Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (as opposed to an alpha hydroxy acid). It is a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory agent used in skincare to combat acne and provide exfoliation, and in hair care to combat dandruff.
The hydroxy acids exfoliate the top layer of skin, helping smooth and even complexion, keep pores unclogged, brighten skin and even fade dark marks and discoloration.

How to use salicylic acid
Usage: 0.5-2% solution for face care, up to 3% for shampoo or body care products.
There are a few ways to incorporate salicylic acid into products and formulations. In formulations, salicylic acid requires a humectant to dissolve, which is then used in the water phase. It can be dissolved in propanediol, or to a lesser degree in glycerine. It is poorly soluble in water on its own. Gentle heating may be required to fully dissolve.
In ready-made products, the salicylic acid powder can be blended straight in without the need to dissolve it first.
Remember to check the pH of your product after adding salicylic acid, as it can lower the pH significantly. You don't want to go much lower than pH 3.5 or your skin may be irritated.
Salicylic acid ingredients
Pure salicylic powder (99-100.5% assay).

For your safety
Do not overuse salicylic acid as it may cause dryness or irritation. Follow up with sunscreen if using in the morning/daytime, as any type of exfoliant can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn.
