Artemisia afra, commonly known as African wormwood or wilde wormwood, is a perennial plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is native to South Africa and is used in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including fever, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues. The plant's leaves and branches contain compounds such as thujone and cineole, which have been found to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also used as a natural remedy for various ailments like cold and flu, fever, and headaches.

  • It is primarily used as a bitter and therefore has the effect of stimulating and invigorating the whole of the digestive process
  • Assists with the treatment of coughs, colds, headaches and a sore throat.

Herbal Tea (Infusion): Place 1-2 tsp in a cup of boiling water. Leave to steep for 10-15 min. Strain and drink hot or cold 2 times a day.

Steam inhalation: Place 1-2 tsp in water and bring to boil. Take off heat and inhale the steam.

Volatile oil: sesquiterpene lactones, acetylenes, flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans

  • It is pungently aromatic and potentially dangerous if taken in high doses. In high doses it may cause intoxication with vomiting, severe diarrhea, retention of urine, stupor and convulsions
  • Habitual use of wormwood could cause convulsions, fits, stomach cramps, intoxication, vomiting, delirium and vertigo
  • Do not use over prolonged period and do not use during pregnancy.
  • Avoid if suffering from any seizure disorder
  • Continuous use is not advisable
  • It has an addictive nature
