Dried Frangula Bark / Buckthorn is a mild to moderate laxative that produces better bowel movements without causing irritation. Traditionally, frangula bark was used with other herbs in many conditions that required the removal of toxins, such as parasitic infestation and skin conditions.
Sizes: 200g, 500g or 1kg.
This product is certified: Vegan and Food Grade.
Uses & benefits (internal)
- The anthraquinone glycoside and tannin content of the dried bark ensures that it produces better bowel
- The dried bark can calm an irritated gut, as well as encourage it to move regularly
- Conditions such as gallstones and worms may benefit from efficiently moving bowels.
- Frangula tends to soften faecal matter, thus making bowel movements easier and improving haemorrhoids (piles)
How to use
- Adults and children older than 12 years of age: Use 2g – 4g in a cup of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10 minutes under cover before drinking. Best taken at bedtime.
- Should it be necessary, the dosage may be increased to one cup of tea in the morning as well as one cup at bedtime.
- The correct dosage for each individual is the smallest dosage necessary to maintain a soft stool.
- Frangula bark should not be used continuously for more than 1 or 2 weeks.
- Do not exceed the stated dosage. Seek professional advice before long-term usage.
Warnings
- Like all laxatives, frangula bark should not be taken by patients suffering from faecal impaction and undiagnosed, acute or persistent gastrointestinal complaints, e.g. abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting unless advised by a doctor because these symptoms can be signs of potential or existing intestinal blockage (ileus).
- If laxatives are needed every day the cause of the constipation should be investigated. Long Term use of laxatives should be avoided. Use for more than 1 - 2 weeks requires medical supervision.
- Frangula bark preparations should only be used if a therapeutic effect cannot be achieved by a change of diet or the administration of bulk-forming agents.
