Meet the mineral-dense moss that does everything - nourish, soothe, strengthen, and hydrate, both inside and out.
Carrageen moss grows naturally on the rocky Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America - especially Ireland, the UK, and Eastern Canada. It has been used in Atlantic and European folk medicine and cookery for centuries, gently simmered in water or milk to create a soothing gel for painful throats, coughs, or unsettled digestion. It also feeds gut bacteria as a natural prebiotic and was traditionally used to help the body recover after illness.
♡ Why we love it: Irish Moss is incredibly mineral-dense and famous for its mucilaginous, jelly-like qualities. Its key compounds include carrageenan (what creates the gel), 8 –10% protein, and a range of phenols and metabolites as antioxidants and soothing agents. It’s absolutely brimming with vitamins A, B, C, and E, plus minerals like iodine (in generous amounts), calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulphur, and other trace elements.
With this kind of nutrient profile, it genuinely earns its superfood reputation - working internally as a soothing demulcent gel for chest and digestion, a gentle mineral-rich tonic, a vegan thickener, and a natural source of iodine. In haircare, its gel helps with moisture retention, smoother and softer strands, easier detangling, a more comfortable scalp, and even adds a touch of protein-like strength.
In skincare, this ocean sourced humectant forms a light, tightening film that hydrates, soothes, cushions, nourishes, and protects, making it perfect for calming, barrier-supportive, and glow-giving formulations.
