Bearberry Leaves are a botanical powerhouse loved by wellness gurus and dermatologists alike. Traditionally used in Native American, European, and Asian herbal medicine, Bearberry was sometimes smoked, but more often brewed into a herbal tea for urinary tract health. It was valued for keeping the urinary tract healthy, easing kidney and bladder discomfort, calming inflammation, and naturally reducing water retention. This is due to its many active compounds, one being arbutin, which converts into hydroquinone in the body, delivering gentle yet effective antimicrobial action.
♡ Why we love it: Bearberry is excellent in skincare. It’s packed with tannins (to refine and tighten pores), ursolic acid (a soothing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant), and - most notably - the earlier mentioned arbutin. Arbutin is often considered one of the top skin brighteners. A botanical that truly has you glowing from the inside out.
Size: 100g.
Most effective bearberry leaf extracts
Different solvents extract different compounds. Here is ranked, which solvent extracts the most useful compounds.
- Alcohol: Extracts both water-soluble (arbutin, tannins) and some fat-soluble components (ursolic acid). Yields a high amount of arbutin, good amount of tannins and partial ursolic acid extraction.
- Water: Arbutin and tannins are highly water-soluble. This means that you’ll extract maximum arbutin content and a strong tannin extract, but little to no ursolic acid.
- Vinegar: Less potent extract in comparison to a water extract, though it does penetrate plant tissues better than plain water and also adds mild preservative qualities. This also extracts little to no ursolic acid.
- Oil: This will have a poor arbutin and tannin yield, though it will extract more ursolic acid than the other extracts. This makes the oil extract receive more anti-inflammatory benefits.
