INCI: Arnicae mexicana / Arnikabluten

Arnica Flowers are a powerful herbal remedy for relief and recovery. Belonging to the sunflower family, they are native to Mexico and Central America, where they’ve traditionally been infused into oils and tinctures in Mexican folk medicine. Though internal use is debated, their topical benefits are well recognised - helping with bruises, sprains, swelling, sore muscles, and inflammation. Today, Arnica remains a favourite in sports recovery, massage preparations, and for easing the aches of conditions like fibromyalgia.

♡ Why we love it: Arnica Flowers contain a potent mix of active compounds. Sesquiterpene lactones provide strong anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, flavonoids add antioxidant support, thymol contributes antimicrobial benefits, and mucilage brings gentle soothing action. This combo synergises and helps minimise swelling, reduce stiffness, relieve muscular pain, stimulate circulation, and fade bruising. Arnica is also used for insect bites and minor skin irritation – though it shouldn't be applied to broken skin.

Sizes: 200g, 500g or 1kg.

Dried Arnica can be used to make tinctures, infusions, compresses, and salves for external use only. When applied topically an Arnica infusion can help alleviate muscle pains, help treat leg ulcers in diabetics, and help heal contusions, sprains, and bruises.

Different solvents extract different compounds.  Here is ranked, which solvent extracts the most useful compounds.

  1. Alcohol: Most effective solvent for Arnica’s key compounds - especially sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, thymol, and aromatic resins. This makes potent topical tinctures, liniments, sports rubs - usually 40–70% ethanol.
  2. Oil: Effectively extracts fat-soluble compounds like some lactones, flavonoids, and anti-inflammatory resins, while being gentler than alcohol. Makes it great for massage oils, balms, salves - the slow absorption prolongs relief.
  3. Vinegar: Extracts some flavonoids, acids, and a smaller amount of lactones. The acidic profile can also stimulate local circulation when used in compresses. Weaker medicinally than alcohol and oil for pain relief, though is used for mild topical soaks and combined with herbal vinegars.
  4. Water: Least effective for Arnicas main compounds, as it pulls mucilage and some flavonoids, but leaves most lactones, thymol, and resins behind. Can be used in compresses or washes for very mild skin soothing - but is not great for the potent anti-inflammatory "punch" you could get from an Arnica extract.
