INCI: Potassium sorbate

Potassium sorbate can be used to preserve all kinds of DIY cosmetic products like creams, lotions, shampoos, makeup and sunscreen products.

Potassium sorbate is the inactive salt of sorbic acid, which is activated on contact with water.

It is effective against mould and yeast, but is not effective against bacteria. Therefore is is most commonly used together with sodium benzoate, which is effective against fungi and bacteria.

How to use potassium sorbate

Usage rate: 0.1-0.3%

Dissolve in the water phase.

Adjust the final pH to around 4.4 for maximum efficacy.

Potassium sorbate is not effective at all in products with a pH over 6, so please adjust your formulation accordingly.

Include Vitamin E in the formulation as an antioxidant.
