Malic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (also known as AHAs or the fruit acids) first found in apples in 1700s. Malic acid inhibits yeasts, molds and bacteria, controls the pH in formulations and acts as a skin exfoliant, removing dead cells, encouraging cell turnover, brightening skin and helping to keep pores unclogged.
Malic acid is the one of the larger molecules of the hydroxy acids. This means it has decreased skin penetration abilities but makes it the more gentle of the AHAs. It also has humectant properties.
The hydroxy acids exfoliate the top layer of skin, helping smooth and even complexion, keep pores unclogged, brighten skin and even fade dark marks and discoloration.
Sizes: 1kg.
Usage: malic acid works well with Vitamin C, vegetable glycerine and hyaluronic acid to increase brightening and hydrating effects. Can also be used together with other acids. Add to shampoos, lotions, nail treatments, serums and acne and anti-aging products.
1-3% in the aqueous phase.
Malic acid
Simple Malic Acid Serum
2.5% malic acid
97.5% hydrosol of choice
Combine everything in a spritzer or pipette bottle. Use up to 3 times per week. Use in the evenings as AHAs can make your skin sensitive if used often. Read more about our Malic acid and water based serums in our blog.
Keep well sealed and store away from children, animals, moisture, sunlight and heat. If pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult with your medical care-giver before use.
Malic acid, though one of the gentlest of the acids, can still cause irritation. Follow up with sunscreen if using in the morning/daytime, as any type of exfoliant can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn.
