Helping people to help animals: Fisantekraal Animal Welfare

16 October is internationally recognised as World Food Day. This can be anything from the production of food to the sharing of food. Not only did we have the privilege to work with the Greenville Soup Kitchen, but we also thought of our furry friends.

Since 2005, the Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has been looking out for the animals of Fisantekraal, Greenville, Klipheuwel, Morningstar and the surrounding farms.

They provide medical help and food, but also focus strongly on education and sterilisation. They believe that if pet owners are better informed, their pets will be treated better. However, should they find that an animal is suffering, they work towards finding a new, loving forever home.

Sterilisation is something that should be a priority in South Africa (and the world!). Recently, SA vet, Amy Jackson-Moss, caused an international stir when her appeal against overpopulation went viral. She certainly gave us a lot to think about…

FAW not only makes sterilisation a priority, they also provide the incentive of a kennel, should you bring your dog to their clinic to be sterilised (and your doggo needs one!). In the poverty-stricken communities that they serve, this is an invaluable exchange, for the pets involved, their loving owners and especially the thousands of animals that would have suffered due to overpopulation.

There are many ways to get involved with this wonderful group of people at the FAW, who work so tirelessly to better the lives of animals. For them, there is no such thing as “too little” - every little bit helps to make a difference together!

On World Food Day, the Essentially Natural Team donated much needed puppy and adult dog food to the FAW. We are so thrilled to know that this will go towards making a difference in both human and animal lives!

Where it all started: Before their clinic was built, the FAW ran their operation from these containers. Now, the containers house their second-hand shop. They also distribute dog food - packaged into smaller, affordable parcels - to the surrounding community.

Hello Sokkies ('Socks')! This cutie pie greeted us when at our arrival, and is clearly a loved supporter of the FAW!

This little darling stole the show! She is the last remaining pup of a litter (all adopted), still too small to find her forever home. We all know by now that Juanita cannot resist a furry face... The little pup toured the clinic with us!

Can you believe that this gorgeous girl is the little pup's mom? She was so tail-waggingly happy to have visitors!

Meet Daisy. This stunning, affectionate kitty was cruelly left behind when her owners moved away. Hopefully she will find the forever home that she deserves very soon! In the meantime, the staff take it in turn to take her (and some of their other charges) home for weekends, to gift them some freedom and TLC.
