You spill your coffee with the shakes. Your head feels disconnected. You peer in the mirror but can't actually see your eyes you are so sleep deprived. If these are your symptoms as the parent…the likelihood is your child is suffering from teething.
Sadly, there is no magic wand for the teething blues, but there are natural remedies available to bring relief to baby and to you!
Essential Oil Remedies
German and Roman Chamomile is a safe option. Chamomile has been used for centuries to ease gum inflammation, upset tummies, skin ailments and to help with sleep disorders. Its' anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, muscle relaxant, antispasmodic, anti-allergenic and sedative properties make it an obvious choice for teething.
Lavender essential oil is well known as the only essential oil that is safe to be used directly on the skin (even so dilution is necessary for children under 2 years). Lavender is a pain reliever, an anti-inflammatory and anti-septic. It also smells wonderful and soothes and calms.
Dilute one drop each of Lavender and Roman Chamomile with pure coconut oil and apply to the jawline or cheek for teething relief. See below for dilution guidelines according to your child's age.
Clove Essential Oil is in many teething remedies because of its pain relief properties but it is not considered safe for infants under 2 years. If your child is old enough, clove oil must be diluted and you need to check for sensitivity.
Dilution Guide:
- children between 6 months and 6 years - 1 drop per 4 teaspoons of carrier oil
- children 6 years and over - 1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil
- Adults - 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil
