Sodium phytate is a natural and globally approved chelating agent. Chelating agents help bind metal ions in water, reducing oxidation and discolouration, and boosting the efficacy of the preservative.
One would therefore use sodium phytate in any formulation containing water. While it isn’t essential to use a chelating agent, it is recommended as it can give your products a better shelf life and prevent discolouration from occurring.
Sodium phytate is a natural alternative to EDTA.

How to use sodium phytate
Usage rate:
In O/W emulsions: 0.05 - 2%
In rinse off products: 0.1 - 0.2%
Don’t use in W/O emulsions.
Dissolve the sodium phytate into the water phase. Sodium phytate is best used with other antioxidants such as Vitamin E and ascorbyl palmitate.
NB: sodium phytate is a salt/electrolyte, and some ingredients do not tolerate electrolytes well. Avoid use with electrolyte-intolerant ingredients.

Sodium phytate is around pH 3, but works best at a higher pH around 6.
Keep in mind that the low pH of sodium phytate may impact the formula so remember to adjust the pH to correct levels.
