Deionised water has been passed through an ion exchange process whereby ions and salts, carbon dioxide, and other contaminants that are found in normal water are removed.
In cosmetics and skincare, deionised water is essential in emulsions and other products containing water, as the interaction between components is minimised, meaning less chance for contamination and destabilisation of the formula.
Deionised water also has a surprising number of other handy applications - more on those below.
