Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid, distantly related to the alpha and beta hydroxy acids. It is considered to be very effective at treating acne and rosacea prone skin, and can also help with evening skin tone and hyperpigmentation.

Uses & benefits of azelaic acid
- Helpful for acne prone skin
- Comedolytic - reduces and prevents comedones (blackheads)
- Reduces redness and inflammation
- Gently exfoliates the top layer of the skin
- Can be helpful with hyperpigmentation and dark marks

- Great for rosacea
- Works well with other acids: AHAs & BHAs as well as retinol and niacinamide. But if formulating with these together, care should be taken in the amounts so as not to irritate the skin.
How to use azelaic acid
Azelaic acid is poorly soluble in water. It can be dissolved in propanediol with heat.
Usage rate: 0.5-5%. Higher concentrations are available in prescription products.
Please always do a skin patch test first when working with acids.
Like with retinol, azelaic acid works best when used consistently.
