Hydrosols are a by-product of the essential oil steam distillation process. Essential oils are made by steaming plant material, and two extracts are produced from this process: essential oil and water from the condensed steam. The essential oil is scooped off the top and the water left over is the hydrosol. But this hydrosol is not simply water anymore! It is infused with properties of the plant, may contain minuscule amounts of essential oil, and has a beautiful scent.
Hydrosols are useful water replacements in formulations as they have nice scents and contain properties of the essential oil and the plant from whence they came from.
They can also be spritzed directly on the face as a beautiful toner and moisturiser, used as body sprays and perfumes, added to bath water, used as makeup removers, the list goes on.
